Me and Bukowski: This Day is Shot

Encinitas, CA: FreeThought Publications, 2000. Limited First Edition. Single Sheet in Envelope. Signed by Linda King & photographer Michael Montfort. "This day has had it/ This day has gone sour/ And I'm going to fuck it up more/ I am going out dancing/ and leaping and swaying and flirting/ And you are going to be/ so tired from the track/ That you are going to bed/ But I love to dance/ And you love the track/ I will dance...you will bet/ I won't object to your sport/ You won't object to mine/ I'll see you/ When I get back in the morning/ Hopefully before you leave for the track" ("This Day is Shot," first stanza) A poem by Linda King (b. 1940), an American sculptor, playwright, poet & editor who was the girlfriend of Charles Bukowski (1920-1994)- the cult favorite poet-denizen of the dive bar & the racetrack- during 1970-75. The poem is dated 1974, & therefore is exemplary of King & Bukowski's volatile life together as it was unfolding. Single sheet folded once vertically to form four pages including covers, enclosed in envelope with printing/illustration at front panel. issued as the first number in publisher's/ King's Me and Bukowski series. With reproduction of a contemporary photograph of Bukowski & King together taken by Michael Montfort (1940-2008), the noted German-American photographer known for his images of Bukowski & other celebrities. One of an edition of 100 copies, this is copy No. 56/100 as hand-written in black ink at lower right area of envelope front & in green ink at lower right area of rear cover folded sheet. Below her printed name on front sheet cover, King has hand-written her exuberant signature in black ink. Below his printed name on rear sheet cover, Montfort has hand-written his signature (first initial & last name) also in black ink. This writer notes with grateful respect Gary Aposhian (1962-2007), the editor/publisher behind FreeThought- my own essay about my visit with William S. Burroughs, "Back at the Pond," was published in the Fall 2000 issue of FreeThought journal (see our item No. 3621). A beautiful production; a most-scarce King collectible in its singularly rarest contemporary form, of especial interest to the Bukowski-related completist & Montfort devotee.
