Ann Arbor, MI: Q Ltd., 2019. First Edition. Single Sheet. Signed by most festival performers. This poster (appx. 18” x 24”) memorializes the 42nd annual Ann Arbor Folk Festival which took place during January 25 and 26, 2019 at the Hill Auditorium. Friday January 25 was headlined by the award-winning icon Brandi Carlile (b. 1981) whose 2018 album By the Way, I Forgive You won a Grammy Award for Best Americana Album in 2019 and was nominated for Album of the Year. Carlile signed along the left edge near center in silver. Also featured with Brandi Carlile on the first day of the festival was Gregory Alan Isakov (b. 1979) a South African-born American singer-songwriter; Isakov signed to the left of his printed name in silver. Haley Heynderickx (b. 1993), a Portland-born Filipino-American singer-songwriter, grew up singing in church, and her debut EP was released in 2016; Heynderickx signed “Haley” with a heart at center near right edge in silver. Sam Lewis is a Nashville-based soul/blues musician, and he signed to the right of his printed name in silver with a simple “S” and his trademark “x” within the bottom loop. Parsonsfield is a multi-genre band based out of Connecticut made up of Chris Freeman, Antonio Alcorn, Max Shakun, Erik Hischmann, all of whom would sing as well as trade places and instruments while on stage; Freeman signed to the left of the printed band name; Alcorn signed just to the left of Freeman; Shakun signed an “M” with a flourish to the right of the printed band name; Hirschmann signed “Erik” to the right of the printed “MICHIGAN RATTLERS” (all in silver). The Michigan Rattlers are a group of childhood friends from Petosky, MI: Graham Young, Adam Reed, Christian Wilder, and Tony Audia; Young signed below the printed “MULVEY” at the bottom of the January 25 roster; Reed signed just to the left, below the printed “PETER”; Wilder signed to the left of the printed “JOAN” (all in silver); Audia’s signature cannot be identified. Peter Mulvey (b. 1969) is a folk singer-songwriter from Milwaukee, WI, and he served as emcee for both days of the festival; Mulvey signed below his printed name at the bottom of the January 26 roster in silver. Saturday January 26 was headlined by Canadian singer-songwriter and composer Rufus Wainwright (b. 1973); Wainwright signed at a vertical slant in silver above his printed name. The trio I’m With Her is made up of Sara Watkins (b. 1981), Sarah Jarosz (b. 1991), & Aoife O’Donovan (b. 1982); Watkins signed to the right of the printed band name; O’Donovan signed just to the right of Watkins; Jarosz signed just to the right of O’Donovan with a “19” marking the year (all in silver). Joan Osborne’s Dylanology feat. Jackie Greene features the Osborne, Greene, Amy Helm and Robert Randolph. Osborne (b. 1962) released Songs of Bob Dylan in 2017, a studio album tribute to Bob Dylan. A live recording of the group performing the album will be released later this year (2025) entitled Dylanology LIVE at the United. Jackie Greene (b. 1980) has performed as a solo artist and in several groups before joining Osborne’s band. Osborne signed over her printed name in silver, and Greene signed in the lower left corner with a small version of his trademark “J” also in silver. Pokey LaFarge (b. 1983) is an Illinois-born blues musician; LaFarge signed to the right of his printed name in silver. AHI (Ahkinoah Sabah Izarh, b. 1983) is a Canadian-born singer-songwriter known for rich vocals and a unique folk-rock sound; AHI signed and printed his stage name in the lower-right area of the moon image in black marker. The RFD Boys served three decades as the house bluegrass band of the Ark after forming the group while attending the University of Michigan; founding member Richard Van Akkeren Dieterle (1941-2012) sadly passed away, and the group is now made up of lead singer/guitarist Charle Roehrig, banjo player Willard Spencer, bassist Paul Shapiro, fiddler David Mosher, and guitarist Dan Roehrig; Charlie Roehrig signed in silver at the center near bottom edge to the left of Joan Osborne’s signature. He, or another member, also wrote “RFD Boys” in silver to the right of their printed band name. Hill Auditorium (1913) is the largest performance venue on the University of Michigan campus, legendarily designed by architect Albert Kahn to be acoustically perfect for every audience member. The Ark is Michigan’s nonprofit home for folk and roots music, and it is considered one of the top music clubs in the world. It has been in existence in various locations since 1965. The 48th annual Ann Arbor folk festival occurred just a few weeks ago as of this writing.
