Original Concert Handbill: "Remember the Family Dog?" (Aug 14-16, 1970)
San Francisco, CA: San Andreas Fault, 1970. First Printing. Single Sheet. “Remember the family dog? / Here’s a surprise—The Family Dog / is still around! Out at 660 Great / Highway!” This handbill (appx. 8 3/8” x 10 5/8”) promotes a show featuring It’s a Beautiful Day, Osceola, and Sawbuck at 660 Great Highway during August 14-16, 1970. The designer signature on the print reads “SAF69” which causes it to be frequently misdated at 1969, but this event was the penultimate installment of The Family Dog on the Great Highway series in 1970, according to Eric King’s Collector’s Guide (FD-700814-OHB-A, pg. 301). After the city of San Francisco refused to renew the Family Dog's business license at the Avalon Ballroom, Chet Helms had to find a new location. The Family Dog On The Great Highway series opened on June 13, 1969 with Jefferson Airplane at the former Edgewater Ballroom, part of the Playland At The Beach complex (a seaside amusement park). This building dated back to the 1880s and lasted through the mid-1970s. There is only one other variant of this handbill (printed on coated stock), but the measurements and uncoated stock of this example ensure it is a first printing. San Andreas Fault provided designs for many Family Dog events. It’s a Beautiful Day formed in 1967 with Pattie Santos (1949-1989) as lead vocalist and David (1941-2023) & Linda LaFlamme (1939-2024) backing her up on violin and keyboards, respectively. Osceola was a five-piece band founded by lead guitarist Bill Ande, guitarist Alan Lott, bassist Chuck Nicholas, and drummers Donny Fields and Richard Bevis, and they named the band as an homage to their homestate of Florida. The band never recorded though they performed together for several years in the early 1970s. Sawbuck was founded in 1969 by Mojo Collins, Chuck Ruff, Bill Church, Starr Donaldson, and Ronnie Montrose, and they signed with Bill Graham’s Fillmore Records shortly thereafter. Single sheet: first edition, first printing, with all points in King’s guide. In relatively fine condition with minor bumping to the fine edges and corners with an appx. 2” long crease to bottom right corner; minor spotting to recto visible in the white area of the “O” in “DOG” which has bled through to verso. Fine. [Item #7416]
