Evergreen Review Vol. 13 No. 70 (September 1969)

New York, NY, USA: Evergreen Review, Inc., 1969. First Printing. Perfect Bound in Wrappers. This vintage number of the legendary literary, cultural & arts journal chiefly edited by Barney Rosset features the story "The Birth, Life and Death of an Underground Newspaper" by Charles Bukowski (1920-1994), the great American cult favorite poet-denizen of the dive bar & the racetrack, preceded with an evocative illustration by Peter Bramley (1945-2005), most-acclaimed for his work as art director & cartoonist for the National Lampoon satirical magazine. (pgs. 40-43, 67-72; Debritto, B447, pg. 194). Also in this issue: An article by John Lahr about his father Bert Lahr's (who famously played the Cowardly Lion in the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz) co-starring in the first performances of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot in Miami, & later on Broadway in NYC- an excerpt from his then-forthcoming memoir Notes on a Cowardly Lion; an essay on the struggles of Black American professionals by Nat Hentoff (1925-2017), the award-winning American muckraking journalist & music critic; a portfolio of beautifully erotic photographs by Richard Kirstel, the late noted photographer; & much more. With many delightful ads for LPs, 8-track tapes, psychedelic-risque books & artworks etc. From the collection of Bruce Hutchinson (1965-2023), a beloved & popular Jazz producer/radio host, educator & Beat devotee here in Michigan. Magazine in perfect-bound wrappers, presumed first-&-only printing. A rich & exemplary issue in this most-collectible series from its later magazine-format phase as a sort of ultra-literate & hip alternative-supplement to Playboy in its heyday; of particular interest to the Bukowski devotee-completist, & with distinguished provenance. In relatively quite near-fine condition with mild rubbing, mostly faint scratching & occasional creasing to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at/from edges & corners of same; light rubbing, age-toning to edges of text block. Interior fine with mild age-toning, spotting to inner covers & page leaves, mostly at blank margins/edges; tiny bumps & mostly small, faint creases at corners of some leaves. Near Fine. [Item #7456]
