Corvallis, OR: University of Oregon Press, 1963. First Edition. Offered today is a particularly rare and exciting volume, Northwest Review: Vol. 6, No. 2, Spring 1963. Northwest Review was first published by the University of Oregon in 1957. The inaugural issue sold for fifty cents and included Oregonian Ken Kesey’s (1935-2001) first publication, a short story called “The First Sunday in September.” In its fifty-four year history, the University of Oregon’s Northwest Review published multiple winners of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the Booker Prize, and the National Book Critics Circle Award.Since its new inception in Fall 2020, Northwest Review contributors have been Pushcart nominees, Best American Short Story winners, New York Times bestsellers, longlisted for the National Book Awards, the Pen Faulkner Award, the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, and recipients of Stegner Fellowships in poetry and fiction. Alexis Sears’ poem “Hair Sestina,” which appeared in the Spring 2021 issue of Northwest Review, was included in the 2022 Best American Poetry Series. Today’s offering, Northwest Review: Vol. 6, No. 2, Spring 1963, is a volume that stands as a shining example in the sort of quality that Northwest Review prides itself. This particular volume features the following: “Centrallia: An Unfinished Tragedy” by Robert K. Murray (1922-2019); “To Die in English” by Jack Handley; photographs by Nelson Sandgren (1917-2006); photographs by Bob Crist; “Guatemala: Test Case for the Alianza” by Samuel Shapiro; and “A Drawer of Fish” by the legendary Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) with all points Debritto, B137, pg 142, among many other works and writers. A wonderfully composed and enticingly rare issue in the catalogue of one of the best literary institutions in America. We have found and retained at title page, a small orange price sticker presumably from an initial/previous seller. Softcover. First & presumably only printing though not explicated as such. In relatively near fine condition with minor wear to fine edges, significant rusting at staples, light smudging/staining to front and back covers, and moderate discoloration due to aging/sun-toning.
