The New York Quarterly No. 58 (Fall 2002)
New York, NY, USA: The New York Quarterly, 2002. First Edition. Softcover. This issue of the venerable high-quality poetry journal founded & then-edited by the legendary poet-polymath William Packard (1933-2002) features a Craft Interview with English poet Anna Adams (1926-2011) as well as contributions of poems by Charles Bukowski (1920-1994; Debritto, B1902, pg. 428), Jack Foley (b. 1940), Lyn Lifshin (1942-2019), Tom Rockwell (1933-2024), Elisavietta Ritchie (b. 1932), Antonio de Nicolás (1932-2022), Simone Meunch, Douglas Goetsch (b. 1963), Tony Gloeggler, Sanford Fraser (1932-2019), Pablo Medina (b. 1948), and Carol Goodman (b. 1959). This issue was delayed due to Packard suffering from a stroke in 1996 leaving his left arm and leg paralyzed. Issue 57 was published five years earlier in 1997 with the help of his editorial team, but even an act of God could not deter Packard from his mission: “Yet over the past 6 years and with the generous support of so many gifted individuals who have kept screening all the incoming manuscripts to NYQ, here we are with issue #58 NYQ. And we’re working to assure funding of future NYQ issues over the next 3 years and beyond,” (pg. 7). However, this was the final issue of Packard’s lifetime, which ended in November of 2002. The following issue featured a memorial editorial and interview with Packard, and the journal continued until 2010. A special final issue of this major journal from one of the most reputable editors of poetry journals.
