The New York Quarterly No. 22 (June 1978)

New York, NY: The New York Quarterly Poetry Review Foundation, Inc., 1978. First Printing. Softcover. “It goes without saying that we make mistakes. After the publication of each issue of NYQ, we look at it very carefully and critically to see what works and what doesn't work. And we can be pretty tough on ourselves, in terms of what we are trying to achieve. It might be interesting to cite a couple of examples of what we consider to be errors of judgment or execution in recent issues of NYQ, to see where we feel we failed in our ambition to live up to our own standards of excellence” (William Packard, p. 3). This vintage number of the venerable high-quality poetry journal founded & then-edited by the legendary poet-polymath William Packard (1933-2002). It begins, like Issue No. 19 (TMB Item No. 7483), with a lengthy & admittedly somewhat hilarious accounting of why NYQ sometimes has typos that sounds like an unasked for alibi. It’s almost as if he prepped these issues with a single enemy in mind — a single, bully-like torturer intent on smearing them in reviews for little mistakes like a parent beating their child for getting an A- or something. It’s kind of weird, but also endearing and hilarious at times: and as a reader, you want to reach through the pages (back through history) if only to tap him on the shoulder and say, “It’s fine, man! You’re doing great.” It continues with work by Charles Bukowski (1920-1994; "Letter to Wm. Packard"; Debritto, B1081, pg. 299); Gary Snyder (b. 1930; “Craft Interview with Gary Snyder”); John Updike (1932-2009; “Iowa”); Daisy Aldan (1923-2001; the famed translator of French poetry and onetime teacher of noted Beat poet & Warhol associate, Gerard Malanga, who appears with the poem “Cats of Tossa”); along with several dozen others. For a full accounting of contributors and contents, consult the photos attached to this listing. Finally: for those interested in more than just the work within these magazines — those interested in the milieu that birthed them, as well as the manner[s] in which they Struggled heroically onward — then this issue (No. 22) of Packard’s The New York Quarterly is for you. Trade-format softcover: the first and only printing (of Issue No. 22) of Packard’s NYQ.
