ArtRock Collectible Matted Handbill: The Doors (1995)

San Francisco, CA: ArtRock, 1995. Limited Edition. Single Sheet, Matted. ArtRock Gallery was originally founded by Philip Cushway right here in Ann Arbor, MI, in 1985, and Cushway moved the gallery to San Francisco in 1989. His intention was to celebrate the art of the rock n’ roll poster, and it became the world's largest dealer in rock and roll collectibles. The gallery hosted many art shows highlighting various poster artists or specific bands such as the Grateful Dead, drawing large crowds to see the original prints from the 1960s. An array of posters, autographed items, t-shirts, and other musical ephemera were offered by ArtRock up until its closure, the date of which is unclear. Cushway is still active in the community, but the gallery’s doors are closed, and customers are directed to the D.King Gallery of rock posters on the website. This postcard of The Doors (appx. “4”x 6 ½”) was designed by artist Gary Grimshaw and originally printed by ArtRock in 1990. It is framed by a matte black board (14” x 11”) inlayed with a silver minimalist depiction of the four band members and a silver border. Cut-outs reveal the postcard and a smaller card (appx. 4 1/8” x 2 5/8”) with a quote from “William Blake, as quoted in Aldous Huxley’s The Doors of Perception,” the quote which inspired the band’s name: “If the doors of perception were cleansed / everything would appear as it is, / infinite.” Both cards are adhered to the matboard with two pieces of tape on the verso holding their upper corners. Included is a certificate of authenticity signed by Phil Cushway guaranteeing this “ready-to-frame piece” that “honors a band fronted by the tragic, charismatic genius of Jim Morrison.” In very fine condition with original backing board and sleeve which has a gold-foil sticker in its upper right corner reading “Special Limited Run / ArtRock Collectible.”. Very Fine. [Item #7541]
