Norfolk, CT: Partisan Review, 1946. First Edition. Presented here is the Summer 1946 issue of Partisan Review--which was originally sold for a mere ¢50, as seen on the cover. The Partisan Review started as a left-wing, small-circulation quarterly “little magazine” compiling literature, politics, and cultural commentary and was published in New York City. Launched in 1934 by the John Reed Club of New York City — an American federation focused on Marxist writers and affiliated with the Communist Party USA — Partisan Review was a prevalent part of the Communist political orbit. However, the publication was abruptly suspended in the fall of 1936 following growing discontent toward the primary editors. When the publication resumed in late 1937 additional editors and new writers interested in maintaining a critical stance on Joseph Stalin’s Soviet Union were brought on. This particular issue features the like of: “Three Songs” by John Berryman (1914–1972) American poet and scholar; “Pyrrhus and Cyneas” the first philosophical essay (originally published in France in 1944) by French philosopher-titan and crucial Existentialist figure, Simone de Beauvoir (1908–1986); selections from the diary of avant-garde, surrealist, proto-existentialist writer Franz Kafka (1883–1924); “London Letter” by George Orwell (1903–1950) English author of Animal Farm (1945) & 1984 (1949), and journalist; “Versions of Bolshevism” by American literary critic, essayist and Marxist Philip Rahv (1908–1973); and “The Making of a Poem” by English poet, novelist and essayist Stephen Spender among many other contributions and contributors!
