Sacramento, CA, USA: Artists Contemporary Gallery, 1968. First Edition. Single Sheet. The Artists Contemporary Gallery was located at 5770 Freeport Blvd in Sacramento, California, though now that address is a shopping center. The gallery itself was probably absorbed or outlasted by other art centers in the city. The Artists’ Collaborative Gallery resides just a short walk away from the Crocker Art Museum. The list of featured sculptors includes Jeremy Anderson (1921-1982), Robert Arneson (1930-1992), Clayton Bailey (1939-2020), James Dodd (1923-1999), David Gilhooly (1943-2013), Mike Henderson (b.1943), Richard Jackson (b. 1939), Stephen Kaltenbach (b. 1940), and Gerald Walburg (b. 1936), among others. This print was preserved by the influential American glass artist Marvin Lipofsky (1938-2016) from whose collection we obtained many art prints and exhibition posters. This promotional poster was mailed to Lipofsky by the Gallery as a member of their featured artists though he was not included in this particular show. Single sheet (appx. 14 7/8” x 17 7/8”): presumed first edition, first-&-only printing, as was usual for events of the time. In relatively good condition with centered vertical and horizontal creases where once folded to be mailed; original stamp and postmark still present at top edge of verso; upper-right quadrant shows return address of gallery, stamped, and recipient address, handwritten: “Marvin B. Lipofsky / 1012 Pardee / Berkeley, Calif.”; lower-left quadrant features a handwritten note to Lipofsky from an unspecified Betty, probably of the gallery’s staff, which reads, “Hi— / Nothing of yours has been sold / Good luck on your show! / Betty”; moderate-to-severe dimpling/creasing throughout; mild-to-moderate spotting, more visible on verso; moderate bumping to the fine-edges and corners with very mild surface peeling; top left corner is torn with jagged paper loss; three small pinholes at top right corner.
