Andy Warhol's Interview (June 2004)
New York, NY, USA: Brant Publications, Inc, 2004. First Edition, First Printing. Large-Format Softcover. "We wanted every issue of Interview to be like a great dinner party, where you have a grande dame, an important political figure, a rock star, an up-and-coming actress, and some model." (from Bob Colacello, former Interview Editor). Pop artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987) founded Interview with British journalist John Wilcock (1927-2018) in 1969. In the beginning, the magazine was merely a film critique spread published under the title inter/VIEW: A Monthly Film Journal. This venerable 2004 edition of the modern film and entertainment magazine has much to offer to a variety of different fan legions. For the release of the documentary Bukowski: Born Into This, Interview asks actor Mickey Rourke (b. 1942) about his experience meeting Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) while filming the semi-autobiographical film Barfly. (Debritto A104, pg. 56) Released in 1987, Barfly was written by Bukowski and starring Rourke as Henry Chinaski, who represents Bukowski, and Faye Dunaway (b. 1941) as his lover Wanda Wilcox. American actor Sean Penn (b. 1960) offered to play Chinaski for one dollar as long as his friend Dennis Hopper (1936-2010) would direct, but the European director Barbet Schroeder (b. 1941) had invested many years and thousands of dollars in the project and Bukowski felt Schroeder deserved to make it. Bukowski wrote the screenplay, was given script approval, and appears as a bar patron in a brief cameo. Rourke is quoted as saying "While we were shooting Barfly, Charles would come into my trailer at seven in the morning, go to the refrigerator, open up a beer, and say 'Have a drink' I'd say 'No, I don't drink in the morning,' and he'd go 'You pussy'." This issue of Interview also presents a true time capsule with a 6 page interview and photo spread of infamous American actress Lindsay Lohan (b. 1986), pre-Mean Girls stardom and popularity. Lohan appears on the cover and talks about her rise to fame and the trials and tribulations of being a child actor transitioning into more adult roles. American journalist, filmmaker and feminist Nora Ephron (1941-2012) interviews SNL alumni Al Franken (b.1941) about the state of politics four years before he was elected U.S. senator and thirteen years before he was disgraced out of the government by a sex scandal. International rock and roll legend Lenny Kravitz (b. 1964) is interviewed by photographer Gordon Parks (1912-2006). Spooky Christopher Walken (b. 1943) gets spookier with American journalist and film-critic Sheila Benson (1930-2022). Artistic photographs throughout including a spread on 2004 wedding trends. With other interviews including Rodrigo Santoro (b. 1975) and Joy Bryant (b. 1974); contemporary ads, etc. Two still attached subscription cards included. Trade-format magazine. First edition, first and only printing. Magazine is in relatively fine to very-fine condition with only minor rubbing, scuffing to front and back covers; some but not many bumps to text block. Interior very fine with minor creasing and rubbing to some page leaves. Fine-Very Fine. [Item #7594]
