"Nearing the new / millennium, having outlived / an ancient happiness, / I'm technologically archaic, / allover [sic] / the page you read as well, / along the perpendicular axis, / the variable sames: / the murdering of the poor, / the friends that have been evicted, / Shig Murau is dead. / I march on, against this or that, / for this or that, passionate / for the collective moment / but twisted inside like a / prick that murder and suicide have turned / into a couple of broads in bed / a generation ago right now" (from The Archaic Now Arcane). Offered here is The Archaic Now Arcane, one in a series of hundreds of “Arcanes” penned by the titanic Jack Hirschman (1933-2021), central among mentors to poets of the Baby Beat Generation & Second San Francisco Renaissance during the mid-to-late 1970s.
