Original Concert Postcard: B.B. King, Ballin’ Jack, Christian Rapid (February 4-7, 1971)

San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1971. First Edition. Single Sheet. This postcard designed by Norman Orr promoted a 1971 show at Fillmore West produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991). The verso of this postcard shows a calendar of shows for the month of February, including Neil Young and Van Morrison. Norman Orr’s artistic career began with the dozen rock posters that he designed for Bill Graham in the 1960s. He worked as a graphic designer for fifteen years before establishing his own company. He has gone on to become a talented craftsman and woodworker in Palo Alto, CA. B.B. King (1925-2015), blues guitarist and singer-songwriter, is famous for his fluid string bending, vibrato, and staccato picking. He has been regarded as the single most important electric guitarist of the last half of the 20th century and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Christian Rapid was a group made up of Jim McPherson, Tom Bryant, and Dennis Carrasco. They originated as The Trolls with Bob Rominger and Roger Hedge instead of Tom Bryant. The name changed to The Stained Glass in 1966 when they signed with RCA. Hedge was ousted in 1967 before the band released their debut album in 1969, Crazy Horse Roads, and Rominger was replaced before the release of their second album. After a brief stint as Christian Rapid, the group split up in the fall of 1969 though this show was dated February of 1970. Perhaps the split indicated a halt of new bookings, but they played what was already scheduled, making this show one of their last. Ballin’jack was an American horn rock group formed in 1969 by Luther Rabb (1942-2006) and Ronnie Hammon, childhood friends of Jimi Hendrix. They saw success from touring along the west coast and internationally before breaking up in 1975. In relatively fine condition with crisp edges and vibrant colors; the slightest bumping to the fine edges and corners; minor rubbing to recto; & very minor pink spotting to verso. Fine. [Item #7667]
