Born Tying Knots: Swampy Cree Naming Stories
ISBN: 0916914003
Ann Arbor, MI: Bear Claw Press, 1976. First Edition. Softcover. “What happens in the world? The world’s not made up of things, and names aren’t things either, and the mystery is, how do events and names cross paths and marry? Howard Norman’s naming poems step out of the dreamtime, the time of creation, when everything spoke to each other. They are each a glimpse into the teachings of the old timers, the old original Way. I love them because they make me laugh, they are what really happens in the world.” (Gary Snyder, quoted on back cover) Howard Norman (b. 1949) is an American scholar of Native Canadian tribes and folklore as well as a writer and educator. He spent 16 years living and writing in Canada becoming acquainted with several Cree natives, and he was fascinated by their culture and folklore. This inspired him to return to academia, and he earned a Bachelor degree in English and a Master degree from the Folklore Institute of Indiana University. His publications include many translations of stories from various tribal folklore as well as novels set throughout Canada, inspired by his travels, most recently Come to the Window (2024). Samuel Makidemewa’be was a Cree elder and tribal historian who disappeared in 1973 with no explanation. His stories live on thanks to Norman’s poetic translations. From the collection of Thomas Pohrt, the acclaimed illustrator who, along with his brothers Richard & the late Karl (1947-2013), are/were among the most beloved & accomplished members of the Ann Arbor community.
