Poetry/LA No. 14 (Spring/Summer 1987)

Los Angeles, CA: Poetry/LA, 1987. First Printing. “His blood-smeared horizons / his hawks forming shadows of / doom / his stallions greater than / men / or / if not that / then certainly more life- / enduring and endearing / standing in a lovelier / light…”--Charles Bukowski, first several stanzas of “Jeffers,” Poetry/LA 14, pg 1. Offered today is a poetry mag rarity, Poetry/LA 14: Spring-Summer 1987. Started in 1980 by New Yorker and co-author of millenial favorite children's book "See You Later Alligator" Helen Friedland (1916-2012), Poetry/LA was a semiannual publication that focused exclusively on poets either living, working, or going to school in Los Angeles in an effort to massage the poetry scene in L.A., at the time, into a robust and thriving literary scene. This particular issue, Poetry/LA 14: Spring-Summer 1987, features: two poems, “Jeffers”--quoted above and Buks tribute to Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962) the great American poet-- and “Talk About Being Nuts” by Beat-adjacent, literary-vagabond-legend Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) with points in Debritto, B1368, pg 343; two poems, “Water Song” and “Ball Bearings”, by poet, aerospace project manager, and editor of poetry mag Blue Window, Henry Moro; “Dear Valentine” by poet and educator Carine Topal; “Beyond the Horizon” by Korean poet, scholar, writer, and lecturer, Lee Chul-Bum; Wanda Coleman (1946-2013), who would go on to become the unofficial poet laureate of Los Angeles, according to the LA Times’ obituary; and three poems by the great American poet Gerald Locklin (1941-2021) among many other great works and contributors! Trade format softcover. First & presumably only printing. In relatively fine condition with slight wear to fine edges, and very slight staining/discoloration to front and back covers, otherwise substantially mint inside and out! Fine. [Item #7693]
