Softcover. “there is a place in the heart that / will never be filled // a space // and even during the / best moments / and / the greatest of / times // we will know it // we will know it / more than / ever // there is a place in the heart that / will never be filled // and // we will wait / and / wait // in that / space.” (“No Luck for That,” Charles Bukowski, pg. 1) Started in 1980 by New Yorker and co-author of millennial favorite children's book See You Later Alligator Helen Friedland (1916-2012), this timeless number of the legendary poetry journal chiefly edited by Friedland features many local L.A. poets including Charles Bukowski (1920-1994), the great American author described by some as “the poet laureate of American Lowlife.” Daughter of veteran stage, film, and TV actor Robert Warwick, Betsey Warwick (1933-2007) contributed three poems (pg. 72-74). Gerald Locklin (1941-2021) contributed two poems (pg. 100-101) a few years prior to becoming the poetry editor of the Chiron Review in 1989 where he would continue working until his death. Filipino poet, literary critic, short story writer, and painter, José García [Villa] (1908-1997), winner of the 1973 National Artist of the Philippines for literature, contributed one poem, “The Anchor,” (pg. 64). Also included in this issue: soon-to-be novelist from Northern Ireland David Park (b. 1953) whose first novel The Healing was published in 1992; Beat-inspired California poet Richard J. Weekley (b. 1945); professor of Creative Writing at Maryville University in St. Louis and L.A. native Dana Levin (b. 1965); Australian poet Robert Harris (1951-1993); Wanda Coleman (1946-2013), who would go on to become the unofficial poet laureate of Loa Angeles, according to the LA Times’ obituary; Ron Koertge (b. 1940), who became Poet Laureate of South Pasadena, CA in 2018 after teaching poetry for 25 years at Pasadena City College; and many more!
