Folded Broadside: “Suppertime Conversation (old woman and grandson in New Orleans)”

San Francisco, CA: Sore Dove Press, 2007. Limited First Edition. Folded Sheet in Stiff Wrappers. Signed and inscribed by Janice Blue to Thomas Rain Crowe. “You say women have caused you sorrow? / Sorrow?! / Why sorrow is good for you, boy! / Sorrow is the by-god suPERior tool against evil, boy.” (first lines of poem) Iranian publisher Soheyl Dahi (b. 1954) founded the Sore Dove Press in 1986 after relocating to San Francisco, CA. The press specializes in the writings of the Beat Generation, printing special limited-edition books and broadsides; their most recent release in June of 2024 is The Train Whistle: 7 Unpublished Poems by Joanna McClure (b. 1930), Beat poet and the ex-wife of fellow poet Michael McClure (1932-2020). This broadside from Sore Dove Press features a poem by Janice Blue (1942-2017), one of the significant contributors to the Second San Francisco Renaissance. In 1996, Blue murdered a longshoreman and served several years time for the murder; she published more great poetry after her release. Blue was very close with Bob Kaufman (1925-1986), and they co-authored a book titled Closing Time Till Dawn (1986) during the year of Kaufman’s death. From the archive of Thomas Rain Crowe (b. 1949), the acclaimed American poet who was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s. The TRC archive was acquired, assembled & curated by Third Mind Books as a single item (see our item No. 1010), & its vast number of individual pieces are now being offered incrementally throughout this new year of 2025. The TRC archive collectively represents the entire legacy of the BBG/SSFR, & its critical collaborations-mentorships by the key figures of the original Beat Generation/San Francisco Renaissance. See also Starting From San Francisco (item No. 3071), published by TMB, to obtain a thorough understanding of this important literary phenomenon from TRC himself. Folded Sheet in Stiff Wrappers: limited edition, “Published in an edition of 26 signed and lettered copies”. This copy is personally inscribed along top edge of inside cover in blue ink in lieu of the standard lettering and signature: “to Thomas Crowe / with gratitude / and love / [signed] Janice Blue”. In relatively very fine condition with only the slightest bumping to the fine edges and corners of wrappers; otherwise, pristine. Very Fine. [Item #7706]
