Aldrava Cultural Vol. 6, No. 60 (December 2006)

Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil: Aldrava Letras e Artes, 2006. Folded Sheets. The Brazilian literary newspaper-journal Aldrava Cultural began circulation in November of 2000, marking the birth of Aldravia, a poetic form that emerged in Brazil characterized by its compact structure. It emphasizes brevity and suggestion, inspired by the concept of "maximum poetry, minimum words" proposed by Ezra Pound. This approach is often compared to the Japanese Haiku (which specifies syllable count per line) with poems typically consisting of six words written vertically. The Sociedade Brasileira dos Poetas Aldravianistas (SBPA), which translates to the "Brazilian Society of Aldravianist Poets,” are the leading examples of this style of poetry, including J(osé) B(enedito) Donadon-Leal, president of the editorial board of the Aldrava Cultural newspaper. This issue of Aldrava Cultural made its way to North America via one of its American contributors, Janice Blue (1942-2017), a member of the Baby Beat Generation and a significant contributor to the Second San Francisco Renaissance. Blue’s poem “Beat Aspect” is printed in both English and Portuguese, translated by Éclair Antonio Almeida Filho (pg. 2). Also included in this issue is an analysis of “the complex semiotics” of Antonio Gualda; a discussion by Edmar de Assis Campelo Ávila of the “formation novel” or “educational novel” which had begun to grow in popularity; a review by Carmen Barreto of the book No Coração da Boca (translated In the Heart of Boca) by Vera Lúcia de Oliveira; a summation of the achievements made by the aldravianistas that year and the recognition they had earned written by J.B. Donadon-Leal; along with dozens of poems and more! From the archive of Thomas Rain Crowe (b. 1949), the acclaimed American poet who co-founded and was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s. The TRC archive was acquired, assembled & curated by Third Mind Books as a single item (see our item No. 1010), & its vast number of individual pieces are now being offered incrementally throughout this new year of 2025. The TRC archive collectively represents the entire legacy of the BBG/SSFR, & its critical collaborations-mentorships by the key figures of the original Beat Generation/San Francisco Renaissance. See also Starting From San Francisco (item No. 3071), published by TMB, to obtain a thorough understanding of this important literary phenomenon from TRC himself. Newspaper: presumed first edition, first-&-only printing, as is typical for literary journals and small press publications. In relatively very fine condition with mild wear along the fold; mild bumping to the fine edges and corners of pages; small spot of peeling in lower right margin of front page; otherwise substantially mint. Very Fine. [Item #7763]
