Original Concert Postcard: B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Allman Brothers (January 15-18, 1970)
San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1970. First Edition. Single Sheet. This postcard (appx. 4 & 5/8” x 6 & 1/2”) designed by David Singer promotes a concert which took place during January 15 to 18, 1970 at Fillmore West featuring B.B. King, Buddy Guy, and the Allman Brothers Band produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991). David Singer is credited with many poster designs of this era, and his playing card-inspired designs were “a bit of a departure” from his usual style, according to Eric King. He uses the king of spades for B.B. King and the king of clubs for Albert King the following week (which is listed on the calendar printed on the verso). He also used a diamond gemstone is place of a diamond shape in the style of a playing card for his Elton John/The Kinks poster (see our item no. 7717). B.B. King (1925-2015) was a blues guitarist and singer-songwriter famous for his fluid string bending, vibrato, and staccato picking. He has been regarded as the single most important electric guitarist of the last half of the 20th century and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Buddy Guy (b. 1936) is a blues guitarist and singer who has won eight Grammy awards, and he is included in Rolling Stone’s list of the greatest guitarist of all time. He was recently, as of this writing, featured in the Ryan Coogler film Sinners as the aged protagonist, Preacherboy Sammy, who was implied to have supernatural musical talent. The Allman Brothers Band, credited as “Allman Bros” in this design, was a band formed in 1969 by brothers Duane and Gregg Allman out of Jacksonville, Florida. They blended rock, blues, and country elements, and their live shows featured jam-band style improvisation and instrumental breaks. Their debut studio album was released in November of 1969 just two months before this show. The liquid light show for the concert was created by Missionary Lights. A show at the Berkeley Community Center the following week is promoted near the bottom. Other upcoming shows are listed in the calendar on the verso in addition to their weekly Tuesday night Sounds of the City for auditions, jams, and guest performers. Single sheet: first edition, first-&-only printing with all points in King’s Collector’s Guide (King, BG-212-OPC-A, pg. 549-550). In relatively very fine condition with mild bumping to the fine edges and corners and very mild spotting to verso. Very Fine. [Item #7767]
