The Sixties No. 9 (Spring 1967)

Madison, MN: The Sixties Press, 1967. First Edition. "He was trusting and did not expect to be harmed. He believed in men and hoped in them. The light never went out in him, not even at the last moment, the light that, more than anything else, made him die tragically with his eyes open" (Meeting Miguel Hernandez, pg. 42). This vintage number of the literary journal edited & with contributions by the acclaimed American poet Robert Bly (1926-2021) features "Many Pages In Honor Of" Miguel Hernandez (1910-1942), the venerable Spanish poet, including a letter to him from Spanish poet and gay icon Federico Garcia Lorca (1898-1936, pg. 2). Other homages include printings of Hernandez's own poetry in its original Spanish-language form and their English translations, & his thoughts on poetry and a conversation between him and Chilean poet and early Communism adopter Pablo Neruda (1904-1973, pg. 4). The poem All Over the Dry Grass (pg. 64) is contributed by Gary Snyder (b. 1930), the canonical primary poet & environmentalist of the Beat Generation/ San Francisco Renaissance-&-Beyond. On page 70 Editor Bly gives a critical essay of The Collapse of James Dickey, American author of everybody's favorite ode to banjo-picking, Deliverance. British-born naturalised American poet Denise Levertov (1923-1997) gets the "Crunk" treatment in a critical essay on pages 48-65. With notes on contributors, critical quotes of venerable poets at inner front cover, etc. Included is an original Books of The Sixties Press order-form insert. Trade-format softcover in sewn binding, presumed first-&-only printing. From the collection of Laurence Goldstein (1943-2023), a renowned poet, film critic, editor & academician here at the University of Michigan. A rich & rewarding literary collectible in its singularly rarest original form, of particular interest to the Hernandez scholar-completist, with distinguished provenance. In relatively fine-to-very-fine condition with mild rubbing, age-toning, fading, faint scratching & occasional spotting to front, back covers & spine; a touch of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at/from edges & corners of same; some vertical wrinkling/mild creasing at spine that appears likely as issued; light rubbing, age-toning & occasional faint scratching to edges of text block. Interior fine-to-very-fine with light age-toning to inner covers & page leaves (chiefly at blank margins/edges); tiny bumps, faint creases at esp. upper corners of leaves; minor crease to bottom edge of page 51/52.
