The Sixties No. 6 (Spring 1962)
Madison, MN: The Sixties Press, 1962. First Printing. Softcover. This vintage number of the literary journal edited & with contributions by the acclaimed American poet Robert Bly (1926-2021) features an extensive critical essay on the poetry of Gary Snyder (b. 1930), the canonical primary poet & environmentalist of the Beat Generation/ San Francisco Renaissance-&-Beyond (still active & with us at age 95 as of this writing) by James Wright (1927-1980), the esteemed poet of the Deep Image school who was a close friend & colleague of Bly. The essay is credited to "Crunk" (a pseudonym used in many of these issues) per McNeil, G169, pg. 209. (pgs. 25-42) Also in this issue: A translation of a mini-story by Julio Cortazar from Spanish into English by the great Black Mountain-&-Beyond poet's-poet Paul Blackburn (1926-1971); poems by Eugenio Montale & Pablo Neruda translated by Bly; a special section of "Some Parodies and Satires" which in-jokingly winks at various contemporary authors & styles; & much more. With notes on contributors, critical quotes of venerable poets at inner front cover, etc. Trade-format softcover in sewn binding, presumed first-&-only printing. From the collection of Laurence Goldstein (1943-2023), a renowned poet, film critic, editor & academician here at the University of Michigan.
