Original Printed Photograph of Thomas Rain Crowe & Philip Suntree (a/k/a Philip Daughtry)
Berkeley, CA: n/p, 1977. Original Photograph. Single Sheet. Signed at Recto by Photographer, Sam Silver An original photographic print (appx. 7 & 6/8" x 9 & 6/8" including margins) featuring two great Second San Francisco Renaissance poets, Thomas Rain Crowe (b. 1949) & Philip Daughtry (a/k/a Philip Suntree; b. 1942), the great & greatly varied British-American poet who among many other things is a descendant of Frank & Jesse James, the quintessential Wild Western American outlaws. In TMB’s own Starting From San Francisco, Crowe tells the story of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance, which he was at the center of alongside Daughtry (then known as Suntree) during the 1970s. There, Crowe relates fascinating anecdotes about Daughtry/Suntree in relation to the larger group-phenomenon. Daughtry & Crowe remain close friends & colleagues to this day, another quarter-century since this compilation as of this writing, & we have had the privilege of knowing & befriending them both—true originals. On recto, there are a number of identifying annotations: including one that appears to be the identifying signature of photographer, Sam Silver, of Berkeley, California, along with notations on the subjects, date, place, and ownership. Ostensibly, Silver was one of several photographer-friends Crowe had in his Ginsbergian Rolodex that he employed or invited to capture the Renaissance action. From the archive of Thomas Rain Crowe, the legendary American poet and co-authorial founder of the Second San Francisco Renaissance. For more information on the Thomas Rain Crowe archive (assembled & curated by Third Mind Books), see our book, Starting from San Francisco: Thomas Rain Crowe in Conversation with Third Mind Books (Item No. 3071) & the catalog for the Crowe archive (Item No. 1010), which contains several excerpts and quotations from the book as well as a full listing of the archive’s contents, which are now being offered for sale individually on the Third Mind Books site. In very fine condition with only a touch of rubbing, faint scratching at matte-texture verso (none discernable at glossy recto-image side); a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners; otherwise, clean. Very Fine. [Item #7778]
