Original Concert Postcard: The Byrds, Electric Flag, B.B. King (December 7-9, 1967)
San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1967. First Edition. Single Sheet. This postcard (appx. 4 & 9/16” x 7”) designed by Bonnie MacLean promotes a concert which took place during December 7 to 9, 1967 at Fillmore West and Winterland Ballroom featuring B.B. King, The Byrds, and The Electric Flag produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991). Artist Bonnie MacLean (1938-2020) had been painting noticeboards at the Fillmore in the psychedelic style while Wes Wilson worked as the primary poster designer, and she stepped in after Wilson quit at some point in 1967 due to a falling out with Graham. MacLean married Bill Graham in the summer of 1967, but they divorced in 1975 after a lengthy separation and four years spent as the artist-in-residence at The Fillmore during the venue’s golden age. B.B. King (1925-2015) is a blues guitarist and singer-songwriter famous for his fluid string bending, vibrato, and staccato picking. He has been regarded as the single most important electric guitarist of the last half of the 20th century and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. The Byrds were a folk rock band formed in Los Angeles by frontman Roger (a.k.a. Jim) McGuinn (b. 1942) in 1964, and although their success was short-lived, they are considered to be one of the most influential rock bands of the era. They managed to release twelve album in just eight years. The Electric Flag was a rock band from Chicago with elements of blues and soul. Mike Bloomfield (1943-1981) of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band formed The Electric Flag in 1967 after relocating to San Francisco. The liquid light show for the concert was created by Holy See, ran by Ray and Joan Anderson, and the large screens at Winterland Ballroom make the shows there that much more spectacular. The verso of this postcard is the traditional format with the venue’s address and a “Place Stamp Here” square in the corner. Single sheet: first edition, first-&-only printing with all points in King’s Collector’s Guide (King, BG-96-OPC-A, pg. 433). In relatively very fine condition with mild bumping to the fine edges and corners and very mild age-toning to verso. Very Fine. [Item #7791]
