Broadside: Seed

Sylva, NC: New Native Press, 1985. Limited First Edition. Single Sheet. "From hands that have learned to scratch the/ soil like another skin,/ the seed slips into the wounded earth./ Like the prophet who lays down by water/ and begins to dream.../ the seed begins to take on new life./ WE ARE ALL SEEDS!" (first stanza & refrain) A broadside (appx. 17" x 11") with the title poem by Thomas Rain Crowe (b. 1949), the acclaimed American poet who co-founded & was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s. A bold & beautiful production of Crowe's own New Native Press imprint, with uncredited woodcut illustration. One of 200 (un-numbered) copies printed during the summer of 1985 per colophon below title. From the archive of Thomas Rain Crowe, which was acquired, catalogued & offered as a single item by Third Mind Books (see our item No. 1010). The individual pieces of the TRC archive are now being curated & presented during this year of 2025. See also Starting From San Francisco (item No. 3071), published by TMB, wherein Crowe provides a complete anecdotal-biographical history of the BBG/SSFR & its critical collaborations/ mentorships with key members of the original Beat Generation/ San Francisco Renaissance. In relatively quite fine-to-very-fine condition with only occasional spotting at blank right margin/edge; very slight wear, age-toning/spotting & some tiny bumps, creases at/from thin edges & corners; upper right corner with very small creases & one short, mostly closed tear with minimal loss of paper.
