Original Event Poster: Le Tour de France des poetes de la Baby Beat Generation
La Souterrain, France: La Main Courante, 2005. First Printing. Single Sheet. A promotional poster (measuring appx. 12 x 18”) advertising a string of Baby Beat Generation-based readings which took place over a ten-day period in France in 2005. Seven out of nine events took place in Paris: that most integral of European cities for the development of international Modernism, and keeper of its legacy still today. Two readings, quite interestingly, were staged in Lyon: a city known more for its cuisine and the veritable litany of Bistro chefs it fostered than for literature, whether national or otherwise (see, for example, the “Lyon” episode of noted Burroughsian, Anthony Bourdain's (1956-2018) “Parts Unknown”). At any rate, readers interested in this lot (and the ‘French Connection’ to the Second San Francisco Renaissance) might benefit from recounting the following. While the Second San Francisco Renaissance and Baby Beat Generation was first rescued from obscurity, in France by Mathias de Breyne (“Litterature en Marche 2002,” TMB Item No. 3806; & then Baby Beat Generation [TMB Item No. 7349] in 2005), that honor, in the States goes to Third Mind Books' very own Arthur S. Nusbaum & Joe Provenzano — the deathlessly devoted President and Vice President of this institution. The French tour here advertised, then not only coincided with the release of Baby Beat Generation — but represented the first front-facing media blitz for the group in almost thirty years. As such, this poster (as a collectible) marks a vital turning point in the Second San Francisco Renaissance story; & certainly served as harbinger of the Beat-scholastic legitimation the movement enjoys today. Large-format reading flyer on single sheet: a First Printing from an epochal juncture in the life of the SSFR. From the archive of Thomas Rain Crowe, the legendary American poet and co-authorial founder of the Second San Francisco Renaissance.
