Original Concert Postcard: The Who, Cannonball Adderley, The Vagrants (February 22-24, 1968)
San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1968. First Edition. Single Sheet. This postcard designed by Lee Conklin promotes a concert series which took place on February 22-24, 1968 at the Fillmore and the Winterland Ballroom featuring The Who, Cannonball Adderly, and the Vagrants produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991). Lee Conklin is known as the creator of the album cover art for Santana’s debut album in 1969, and his psychedelic art style contributed some of the most iconic poster designs of the era. This design was based on drawings Conklin did prior to his time with Graham of “butterflies” made of human ears flying over a field of rocks and a blooming flower. There are human figures and animal features, and one rock has an outlet with a cord plugged in. It’s a trippy crossover of nature, humanity, and the senses. Glenn McKay’s Headlights provided the liquid light show for these shows; McKay was a pioneer of the 1960s psychedelic light show, inspired by Ken Kesey’s acid tests. The Who had released their third studio album The Who Sell Out in December of 1967, continuing their ascent to legendary status after My Generation (1965) and A Quick One (1966). Julian “Cannonball” Adderley (1928-1975) was a jazz saxophonist who had played with Miles Davis and John Coltrane before leading his own group with his brother Nat on cornet. The Vagrants were a New York-based rock and soul group formed in 1964 composed of Peter Sabatino, Leslie West, Larry West, Roger Mansour, and Jeremy Storch. The verso features a plain note and address section and a “place stamp here” box along with the return address for the Fillmore. Single sheet (appx. 4 & 1/2” x 7”): first edition, first printing with all points in Eric King’s Collector’s Guide (BG-108-OPC-A, pg. 450). In relatively very fine condition with mild age-toning; very mild bumping to the fine edges and corners. Very Fine. [Item #7816]
