Stroker No. 53 (1993) with: Ephemera
Shavertown, PA: Thomas Birchard & Irving Stettner, 1993. First Edition, First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. "nothing done | nothing ever done | darkness brewing | death of the sun | black snow falling | as you run..." (Tommy Trantino, excerpt from "Zen Mountain", pg. 5). This number of the literary-art-cultural journal edited by NYC St. Marks Place underground denizen Irving Stettner (1922-2004) does not feature (as does almost every issue in this series) a contribution by Henry Miller (1891-1980), the great American author & artist whose earlier works were an influence & inspiration to the Beat Generation, but does have a touching reminiscence of his friendship ("Henry, Joey, and Me, A Henry Miller Reminiscence", pg. 21) by author Kenny Dumain (1923-2001), a queer man who had previously had a lavender relationship with American Icon Marilyn Monroe. Also in this issue are contributions by Stroker regular Bob Davis ("Crossing the Track", pg. 10); one piece of fiction by Stroker’s founding editor, Irving Stettner (“An American Beggar in Paris", pg. 5). Stettner is also the cover artist, drawing a surreal depiction of a presumed man and woman; an "Open Letter to Stroker" (pg. 7) and the poem "Zen Mountain" (pg. 5) from convicted murderer and literary pet, Tommy Trantino (b. 1938); A "Subscribe to Stroker!" subscription card is still uniquely attached, visible first at inner cover then at recto back cover; An Order Form for Miller's "An Open Letter to Stroker" and two of Stettner's works "Thumbing down to the Riviera" & "Beggars in Paradise"; contemporary ads and much more! Literary journal in stapled wrappers: the first-&-only printing of Issue No. 53 of Stettner's vibrant Stroker. A rich & rewarding collectible in this indelible series. In relatively very fine condition with minor age-toning & rubbing to front, back covers & spine-edge; minor bumping to text block mostly at corners. Interior relatively very fine with only slight age-toning to some pages mostly at edges near spine. Very Fine. [Item #7821]
