Stroker No. 50 (1992)
New York, NY, USA: Stroker, 1992. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. This "50th Anniversary Issue!" (front cover, first contents page) number of the literary-cultural-art journal edited by NYC St. Marks Place underground denizen Irving Stettner (1922-2004) features the poem "Where To Put It" by Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) the cult-favorite Patron Saint-poet of the dive bar & the racetrack (pgs. 3-4; Debritto, B1672, pg. 392). An exhiliratingly exemplary contrarian Jeremiad, each line of the poem begins with "don't blame me..." for a litany of humanity's personal & societal ills. (Shifreen & Jackson, C758-C761, pg. 833) Also in this issue: An essay from 1971 entitled "The Astrologer Seen Through the Eyes of a Friend" by Henry Miller (1891-1980), the great American author & artists whose early works prefigured & were an inspiration to the Beat Generation-&-Beyond (pgs. 28-31; Shifreen & Jackson, C759, pg. 833); the humorous erotic poem "Coital Supper" by William Joyce; the travelogue-diary "Red River Journal" by Jean A. Roberts; "The Best Piss of My Life!," an excerpt from "Beggars in Paradise, a novel-in-progress" by editor Stettner; front cover & four interior drawings by Tommy Trantino (b. 1938), a convicted murderer who spent four decades in prison & exhibited talent in art & writing; & much more. With several contemporary ads for East Village eateries, stores etc. following contributions. Chapbook-format journal in stapled wrappers, presumed first-&-only printing. Another quintessential exemplar of the later Mimeograph Revolution NYC Lower East Side Zine era in its singularly rarest original form, of particular interest to Bukowski & Miller completist-collectors. In relatively very fine condition with only a hint of rubbing, faint scratching & age-toning to front, back covers & stapled spine; a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same. Interior very fine with only a bit of age-toning to blank inner covers; tiny bumps & small, faint creases at upper corners of page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #7827]
