Charles Bukowski
Santa Rosa, CA: Black Sparrow Press, 2001. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. “For those who believe in God, most of the big questions are answered. But for those of us who can't readily accept the God formula, the big answers don't remain stone-written. We adjust to new conditions and discoveries. We are pliable. Love need not be a command nor faith a dictum. I am my own god. We are here to unlearn the teachings of the church, state, and our educational system. We are here to drink beer. We are here to kill war. We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us.”--Charles Bukowski. Offered today is a particularly obscure production by the cult writer's writer Jack Saunders (1939 - 2018), A U.S. Air Force veteran & technical writer for IBM who wrote prolifically throughout his life in Florida, mostly self- or unpublished works. This small format chapbook is an effulgent, rhapsodic, and laudatory critical examination of the work of the great literary-outlaw-legend and Beat-adjacent writer-bastard-extraordinaire, Charles Bukowski (1920-1994). Charles Bukowski is an impressive, yet small, work that heaps as much praise upon Buk as it takes an intimate look into his life; in fact, this text would go on to be recycled in Saunders’ 2005 book, Bukowski Never Did This: A Year in the Life of an Underground Writer and His Family. Ultimately, this text remains an undeniably enticing and rare collectible for any and all fans of Bukowski and Saunders! (Debritto, F27, pg. 552) Small format chapbook in stapled wrappers. First & presumably only printing, "Published gratis in February 2001 for the friends of Black Sparrow Press," per colophon. In very fine condition with only the slightest wear to fine edges. Very Fine. [Item #7843]
