Abyss, Vol. 3 No. 1 (Spring 1971)

Somerville, MA: ABYSS Publications, 1971. First Edition, First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. "Who owns Death TV--? | Come through the Powder River pass the car kick out the Sunsystem -- | Dance, Wyoming -- Out of bleeding time slots into the wind/stars --" ("The Photographic Medium", Jan Jacob Herman & Carl H. Weissner). This first number of the third volume of the literary & surrealistic arts anthology edited by Gerard Dombrowski (b. 1948) & published in Massachusetts by ABYSS Publications features 3 of the venerable German-American poet and "Dirty Old Man" Charles Bukowski's (1920-1994) poems ("The Misfit", "Poet in Residence" & "Nobody Wants to Hear Your Troubles"; Debritto B533, pg. 210). It's amazing that these poems ended up in this issue of Abyss because most of the other poems in this issue are experimental concrete poems and the magazine itself focused mostly on Tibetan codes and mystical elements. Also in this issue: Douglas Blazek (b. 1941), the Polish-American founder of the Mimeograph Revolution and early Bukowski publisher has openly and honestly accounted for his past drug-use in the poem "Junk: A True Account of My Drug Life." Assistant to Beat Generation facilitator Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021) and magazine publisher Jan Jacob Herman (b. 1942) & German poet/William S. Burroughs translator Carl H. Weissner (1940-2012) have co-written the prose-poem "The Photographic Medium", a day-in-the-life exhibition quoting (and acknowledging) Beat Generation founder and literary legend William S. Burroughs' (1914-1997) Who owns Death T.V.? ; Anarchist Jackson Mac Low (1922-2004) also presents five of his poems including classics "A Sonnet for Gerard de Nerval" & "Peaks and Lamas" in the special section entitled "The Early Poems of Jackson Mac Low Spring 1958". The front cover shows a reproduction of a " Chinese year of the iron dog" calendar by mystic poet and tattoo magician R. O. T. ( Richard O. Tyler; 1926-1983). With contemporary ads and much more! Staplebound Literary Magazine: the first-&-only printing of Volume 3, No. 1 of Abyss.
