New York, NY, USA: Random House, 1991. First Edition. Hardcover. "A sailboat founders in the waters off Bermuda, leaving a young couple stranded in a life raft. They reassure each other: There's nothing to worry about, the weather's fine, their emergency beacon is sending out a continuous distress signal. And yet, they are afraid. And they should be. For beneath their raft, something is moving. Something incredible. And savage. And huge. Peter Benchley, the man who created Jaws and other best-sellers, now gives us Beast, his most thrilling high-seas adventure yet." (from front flap) The page-turning novel of horror, suspense & speculative science fiction by Peter Benchley (1940-2006), the acclaimed & popular American author of the phenomenal best-seller Jaws (1974), which was made into the iconic film version (1975). This novel, also adopted into a (television) film (1996), tells the riveting story of the deadly havoc wreaked by a monstrously gigantic squid; & is also a cautionary tale informed by Benchley's ecological-environmental concerns & his devotion to conservationism. Hardcover in unclipped first-issue dust jacket (with $21 price printed at front flap, ""6/91" at rear flap), first edition as stated at copyright page, first printing as indicated by number sequence thereon (beginning with "2" per contemporary custom of this publisher). This writer purchased & devoured (sorry) this tome at the time of first publication, & I can attest to it being a very fun, thoughtful & expertly rendered read in its genre. A Benchley classic collectible in its rarest original form- a perfect late-summer entertainment (just don't go too far out in a boat while you're reading it...).
