Original Concert Postcard: Buffalo Springfield, Collectors, Hourglass (Dec. 21-23, 1967)

San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1967. First Edition. Single Sheet. This postcard designed by the acclaimed American artist Stanley Mouse (b. Stanley George Miller, 1940) in collaboration with the great American poster & album cover artist Alton Kelley (1940-2008, known as "Kelley") advertises a series of performances at the Fillmore Auditorium featuring Buffalo Springfield, the Collectors, and Hour Glass during December 21 through 23rd, 1967 produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991). According to Eric King’s Collector’s guide, the shows took place on the 26th through the 31st, but the artwork itself shows “21 / 22 / 23” in the lower, right corner; King also states that “further research indicates the printing plate was altered during the press run,” (pg. 436) which could account for the discrepancy. Perhaps a rescheduling occurred, or perhaps King erred and copied the dates for the subsequent Bill Graham concert series. The design features “a photograph of a large turbine from an older hydroelectric project,” (King, pg. 436), and one of the men in the photo is holding a guitar, which was added by the artists. Buffalo Springfield was a Canadian-American collaboration with Neil Young (b. 1945) and Stephen Stills (b. 1945); Hour Glass was an American soul band formed in 1967 featuring future members of the Allman Brothers Band, Gregg and Duane Allman; the Collectors were a Canadian psychedelic rock band active throughout the 1960s after performing as the house band for CFUN radio in Vancouver, British Columbia. Single sheet (appx. 3 & 23/32” x 6 & 15/16”): first edition, first printing, with all points in King’s Collector’s Guide (BG-98-OPC-A, pg. 436). In relatively very fine condition with vibrant colors and crisp edges. Very Fine. [Item #7917]
