Original Concert Postcard: Procol Harum, Santana, Salloom-Sinclair (October 31-November 2, 1969)
San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1969. First Edition, First Printing. Single Sheet. This postcard designed by Lee Conklin promotes a concert series which took place during October 31 to November 2, 1968 at the Fillmore West featuring Procol Harum, Santana, and Salloom-Sinclair produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991). Lee Conklin is known as the creator of the album cover art for Santana’s debut album in 1969, and his psychedelic art style contributed some of the most iconic poster designs of the era. The distorted lettering in bright red and black are accompanied by similarly-distorted faces with varying expressions which creates a hellish composition that easily transfixes the eye. Santana was formed in 1966 by guitarist Carlos Santana (b. 1947). Now one of the best-selling groups of all time with 25 studio albums, Santana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Procol Harum was an English rock band formed in Essex in 1967 by Gary Brooker, Keith Reid, David Knights, Matthew Fisher, Ray Royer, and Bobby Harrison. Their music was a unique blend of psychedelic rock, blues, R&B, and classical Baroque, and they are best known for their 1967 hit single “A Whiter Shade of Pale.” Salloom-Sinclair was the country-blues-rock duo of frontman Roger Salloom (b. 1946) and vocalist Robin Sinclair (who also performed with several others as Salloom, Sinclair, and the Mother Bear). Salloom’s songwriting style was compared to that of Bob Dylan, and Sinclair’s vocals have been compared to Janis Joplin with a gospel twist sometimes reaching piercing high notes that, although impressive, could sometimes irritate listeners. This combination of performers must have been an unforgettable show at the legendary Fillmore West venue in San Francisco. Single sheet (appx. 4 & 5/8” x 7”): first edition, first printing, with all points in King’s Collector’s Guide (BG-143-OPC-A, pgs. 485-486). In relatively very fine condition with mild age-toning and mild spotting to verso, part of which may be bleeding of the black ink from the printing process; very mild bumping to the fine edges and corners; otherwise appearing substantially mint. Very Fine. [Item #7968]
