For Stanley Heilbrun, Who Fled From Freedom

Cleavland, OH: Absolute Zero Press, 1968. Limited First Edition. Stapled Sheets. “Stanley D. Heilbrun, 28, from Cleveland's Psychedelic Row, is searching for the renaissance man. Heilbrun fled last week rather than appear in Common Pleas Court on charges of possession of marijuana and furnishing a 16-year-old girl with marijuana. He is the former owner of the Headquarters, a bookstore and gathering place for hippies at 11603 Euclid Avenue in University Circle. The renaissance man he is trying to find is in himself and his inner search came to light during an interview with his girlfriend. He is hunted by police now and branded a criminal, but from what his girlfriend knows about him, she finds it difficult to think of him as a criminal.”--Kenneth E. Banks Jr., “Fugitive Cleveland Hippie Seeks Renaissance Man.” Offered today is the 1968 collection of writings For Stanley Heilbrun Who Fled From Freedom. Dedicated to Stanley Heilbrun who, like the quoted section above states, fled from Cleveland after having been arrested for possession of marijuana and furnishing a minor with said marijuana. Heilbrun was also, by all accounts, an anti-capitalist, bookstore owning hippie who loved to smoke marijuana, make music, and oftentimes write poetry. Shortly after Heilbrun fled Cleveland, a number of his friends put together this collection. Featured in For Stanley Heilbrun Who Fled From Freedom are the likes of: “They sed you went everywhere–for Stanley Heilbrun” by d.a. levy (1942-1968), poet, artist and publisher; “For Stanley Who Fled to Avoid Persecution” by Geoffrey Cook; a number of letters/essays from Heilbrun himself; “For Heilbrun” by T.L. Kryss, and a number of xerox’d newspaper articles on Heilbrun’s flight from the law. An incredible rarity for any lover of underground/small press works! Stapled sheets. First & presumably only printing “255 copies published” as stated at copyright page. In relatively fine condition with moderate wear to fine edges, fading to illustrations at front and back covers. Slight fading to interior text block, and mild rusting at staples. Fine. [Item #7977]
