The San Francisco Phoenix Vol. 2 No. 17 (May 1974)
San Francisco, CA: San Francisco Phoenix, 1974. First Edition, First Printing. “For those who believe in God, most of the big questions are answered. But for those of us who can't readily accept the God formula, the big answers don't remain stone-written. We adjust to new conditions and discoveries. We are pliable. Love need not be a command nor faith a dictum. I am my own god. We are here to unlearn the teachings of the church, state, and our educational system. We are here to drink beer. We are here to kill war. We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us.”—Charles Bukowski. The San Francsico Phoenix was a bi-weekly underground newspaper, started in September 1972, then ceased (in January 1975) after it was allegedly linked to Patty Hearst's kidnapping by the militant Symbionese Liberation Army. Offered today is The San Francisco Phoenix Vol. 2 No 17 (1974), an interesting and uniquely rare issue of the legendary underground press. This issue of the Left Wing, Bay Area paper includes: “Notes on a Dirty Old Man,” and “Publishers Suck” by the late, great, poet-vagabond-extraordinaire, Charles Bukowski (1920-1994); a number of articles like “BOYLE,” and “Beyond the Revolution: Anarchism in a New Key,” by Tom McNamara; an interview with the proto-prog giants King Crimson; “Ginsbergs do Poetic Dad/Son Act Here” by Nanos Valaoritis, featuring Allen GInsberg and his father Louis; “Here’s New Message From Little, Remiro” by Russ Little and Joe Remiro; the poem “Open Letter to Russia” by Peter Elder; “Dr. Timothy Leary Tells Us How to Live Forever” conducted by Robert Anton Wilson; and a number of other great contributions and contributors!
