Twisted Image No. 8 (1987) with: Ephemera
Berkeley, CA: Ace Backwords, 1987. First Edition, First Printing. "I hate giving advice because each person and the situation of each person is different." (Charles Bukowski, interview). A largely forgotten underground punk rock tabloid, Twisted Image was about as underground as you can get. "World's Greatest Fucker" Charles Bukowski (1920-1994), author, poet, imbiber, is the featured interview ( Debritto B1354, pg. 340) in this relic from the 1980s and Berkeley, CA. Interviewer Ace Backwords (b.1956, aka Peter LaBriola) and Bukowski discuss Bukowski's writing style, drink of choice, and advice to young writers, with Bukowski eventually advising: "If you must work, try to get a job that is not related to writing, the Arts, or anything of that manner... such occupations soften and protect one too much from the acts of daily living, from true occurrance." The solipsistic Buk poem some suggestions makes an appearance atop the interview, with a tiny Buk doodle at its end, accompanying a photo of the legend. A unique entry in the Bukowski canon. Also with a seemingly mock interview with Spin Magazine publisher Bob Guccionne Jr.; an acount of Noise Editor Mary Mayhem's time in prison in Mary Mayhem's Prison Diary; a review of Tom Brinkmann's last known publication by Art Editor B.N. Duncan in Burning to You Strait from Hell; several cartoons/comic strips from Backwords; reviews; contemporary ads and much more. We have found and retained four original inserts to the paper, including two Backwords Berzerkely Comix, an advertisement for the complete collection of "Twisted Image", and most excitingly, a mock "Wanted by FBI" poster with Bukowski, Beat Generation founding father William S. Burroughs (1914-1997) & transgressive American filmmaker John Waters (b. 1946), proclaiming they are wanted for "Disturbing the Peace, Morals Code Violations, Inciting to Riot, Conspiracy, & Corruption." Newspaper-format magazine, loose sheets folded once horizontally & vertically. First edition, first and only printing. A must have for any Bukowski buff or Bukowski beginner and even Burroughs devotees! In relatively fine-to-very-fine condition with mild rubbing and age-toning to front, back covers and newspaper fold at center; text block has mild age-toning.
