Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada: The Georgia Straight, 1967. First Edition. Folded Sheets. The Georgia Straight is a free weekly news and entertainment periodical associated with the Underground Press Syndicate founded by Dan McLeod (b. 1943). The first issue of The Georgia Straight was published in May of 1967, and a week later, the paper was raided and banned from distribution for publishing obscenities. This the eighth issue includes a letter to the editors from a “M.M. Harrell, Chief License Inspector & Business Tax Collector” which informs them that “the suspension of [their] Publisher’s License is no longer in effect,” (pg. 2). The editors responded below this letter accusing City Hall of gross misconduct and calling the institution a circus. In this issue, Fred Latremouille (1945-2015), a well-known radio personality in Vancouver and co-editor of Georgia Straight, writes in defense of a radio show that had been cancelled (pg. 7); Harry Rankin (1920-2002), a lawyer and long-term alderman on the Vancouver City Council, updates readers on the beautification proposal of False Creek (pg. 6); Dr. Eugene Schoenfeld (b. 1935), a.k.a. Dr. Hip, offers insightful answers to reader questions about health and behavior in his weekly column (pg. 6); Gabor Maté (b. 1944), a physician specializing in childhood development and trauma, writes a lengthy piece on the Six Day War (June 5-10, 1967) between Israel and Palestine (pg. 8-9); American poet Charles Olson (1910-1970) provided an article commenting on wisdom in poetry, referring to Robert Duncan’s contribution to The Artist’s View #5 in July of 1953 which included several pages from his personal diary: “I urge on Duncan or anyone that a poem is not wise, even if it is: that any wisdom which gets into any poem is solely a quality of the moment of time in which there might happen to be wisdoms,” (pg. 5). From the collection of Albert Glover (b. 1942), the great American scholar, bibliographer, author & publisher (with whom we're honored to be acquainted) who is the foremost living authority on literary (& literal) giant Charles Olson. Folded Sheets: first edition, first-&-only printing as is common practice for periodicals. In relatively fine condition with moderate age-toning throughout; mild wear to the creased edges making the paper more delicate at the seam of the outermost leaf which has a very small tear at center of crease; mild bumping, creasing to fine edges and corners; mild spotting to some leaves; pencil markings present in the maze on page 7.
