San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1968. First Edition, Second Printing. Single Sheet. (King BG-142-OPC-B, pp. 484-485). This postcard designed by Lee Conklin promotes a concert series which took place on February 22-24, 1968 at the Fillmore and the Winterland Ballroom featuring Jefferson Airplane, Ballet Afro-Haiti, and A.B. Skhy produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991). Lee Conklin is known as the creator of the album cover art for Santana’s debut album in 1969, and his psychedelic art style contributed some of the most iconic poster designs of the era. Per Eric King's Collector's Guide: "This poster [& postcard] is black, white, gold, and red on a very dark red/brown background. The central image is a creature that is half woman and half airplane. She is a nude woman from the chest up, and from there down she has the body and tail of an airplane. The fuselage of the airplane has scales like a fish, and the tail section appears flexible like the tail of a fish. The insignia on the tail of the airplane/woman is a Yin Yang symbol. The propellers of the airplane are attached to her nipples. Of all the flights (pun intended) of wonderful silliness and whimsy that emerged from Lee Conklin's imagination, this may well be the best" (p. 485). The verso features a calendar of other Bill Graham events, including an advertisement for a four-day stretch in November 1968 featuring Quicksilver Messenger Service, Sun Ra, and Ten Years After! A quintessential relic of time & place. Single sheet (appx. 4 & 1/2” x 7”): first edition, second printing with all points in Eric King’s Collector’s Guide (King BG-142-OPC-B, pp. 484-485). Second printings that include the calendar of Bill Graham events on the verso are frequently considered more desirable than first printings. In relatively very fine condition with mild age-toning; very mild bumping to the fine edges and corners. Very Fine. [Item #8018]
