Sparrow 38: Eight Fairy Tales
Santa Barbara, CA, USA: Black Sparrow Press, 1975. First Edition, First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. "Living, I want to depart to where I am." (D.H. Lawrence, front cover). This thirty-eighth number of the collectible "Sparrow" series of pamphlets published by the venerable Black Sparrow Press is dated November 1975 on the front cover and features Ron Loewinsohn's (1937-2014) eight short stories, "Eight Fairy Tales." The magazine was responsible for publishing many of our beloved Beat poets and writers, and they championed those who were facing censorship elsewhere in the publishing world. American poet and novelist Ron Loewinsohn was associated with the poetry of the San Francisco Renaissance since his inclusion in Donald Allen's (1912-2004) 1960 poetry anthology, The New American Poetry 1945–1960. In 1959, he published his first collection of poetry, Watermelons, which contained an introduction by Beat Generation Founding Father Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) and a prefatory letter by modernist poet William Carlos Williams (1883-1963). See item #7927 to experience the limited first edition itself. Loewinsohn was also Professor Emeritus of English at the University of California, Berkeley after a decade long career as a lithographer. From the collection of Robin Eichele (b. 1941), the noted Mimeograph Revolutionary poet who co-founded the Detroit Artists' Workshop with John Sinclair, & is our good friend nearby. Chapbook in stapled wrappers: first edition, first printing, though neither explicated as such on copyright page, with no reference to further printings. An esteemed example of American short story-telling, in its rarest contemporary form, greatly enhanced by its Beat Generation connection, & with most distinguished provenance. In relatively fine condition with minor-to-moderate bumping to the fine edges and corners of covers and text block; minor creasing to the corners of covers; minor dimpling/creasing to covers and pages near outer edges; minor age-toning mostly to upper edge and margins of front and back covers.
