Against the Silences to Come
San Francisco, CA: Four Seasons Foundation, 1965. Limited First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. “This morning I fight against the silence | (you aren't here). | The newspapers scream, the radio (no Mozart): | a parade, a murder in Reno, | a sub lost in the Atlantic - 129 men, | officers & crew, fathers & husbands | in a mile & a half of water; no radio | contact, silent." So reads the opening lines of Against the Silences to Come by the great San Francisco Renaissance poet Ron Loewinsohn (1937-2014). Published by the Four Seasons Foundation, the publishing project of poet and anthologist Donald Allen (1912-2004), who began the concern in 1964 to publish the authors who had been included in his epoch-defining anthology The New American Poetry (1960).
