Original Concert Postcard: Jefferson Airplane, Charlatans, Blue Cheer (October 11-14, 1967)
San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1967. Single Sheet. This postcard (appx. 4 & 1/2" x 6 & 3/4”) designed by Bonnie MacLean promotes a concert series which took place during October 11th to the 14th, 1967 at the Fillmore West & Winterland Ballroom featuring Jefferson Airplane, the Charlatans, and Blue Cheer produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991). Artist Bonnie MacLean (1938-2020) had been painting noticeboards at the Fillmore in the psychedelic style while Wes Wilson worked as the primary poster designer, and she stepped in after Wilson quit at some point in 1967 due to a falling out with Graham. MacLean married Bill Graham in the summer of 1967, but they divorced in 1975 after a lengthy separation and four years spent as the artist-in-residence at The Fillmore during the venue’s golden age. According to Eric King’s Collector’s Guide, ”The central images are photographs by Herb Greene of each of the three groups on the bill," (pg. 427). Photographer Herb Greene (1942-2025) was a major participant in the 1960s San Francisco art and music scenes. According to his website (www.herbgreenefoto.com), “Greene, a friend of many of San Francisco’s most influential musicians, worked as few photographers have: not as a documenter from the outside, but as a participant within the music scene he was photographing.” The three bands featured here are legendary psychedelic rock bands of the era who regularly appeared on Bill Graham’s marquees. The bold colors and eye-catching design only add to the allure of this piece of rock history. Single sheet: first edition, first-&-only printing with all points in King's Collector's guide. (BG-88-OPC-A, pg. 427) In relatively very fine condition with only minuscule bumps to the fine edges and corners, particularly at bottom edge; verso is clean, though mildly age-toned; otherwise, pristinely mint. Very Fine. [Item #8042]
