New York, NY, USA: Dover Publications, 1977. First Edition, First Printing. Softcover. "...The Forties were the years of Old Hollywood's last stand, though the people concerned didn't know it. Today there are fewer, and some would argue, better movies, but one thing is clear - they are no longer "our" movies" (John Kobal, Introduction pg. X). Austrian-British film historian and author of over thirty books John Kobal (1940-1991) edited this collection of photographs, "Movie-Star Portraits of the Forties:163 Glamor Photos." Kobal is credited with "rediscovering" the great Hollywood Studio photographers including George Hurrell (1904-1992), Laszlo Willinger (1909-1989), and Clarence Sinclair Bull (1896-1979), whose photographs are featured here, amongst many other photgraphers of the time. Kobal was also responsible for organizing the first exhibition of Hollywood related photographs at London's Victoria and Albert Museum in 1974. He reunited forgotten artists with their original negatives and produced new prints for many subsequent exhibitions mounted worldwide at institutions such as National Portrait Gallery, London; Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Portrait Gallery, Washington DC and LA County Museum, Los Angeles, culminating in the release of this book. Celebrities featured include: Silver Screen Sirens Lauren Bacall (1924-2014), Joan Crawford (190?-1977), Bette Davis (1908-1989), Elizabeth Taylor (1933-2011) and Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962); Big Screen Beefcakes Humphrey Bogart (1899-1957), Marlon Brando (1924-2004), Montgomery Clift (1920-1966), Gary Cooper (1901-1961), Erroll Flynn (1909-1959), and John Wayne (1907-1979). Special appearances by African American pioneering actress Lena Horne (1917-2010), Brazilian entertainer Carmen Miranda (1909-1955), Hollywood royalty Katharine Hepburn (1907-2003), gay icon Judy Garland (1922-1969) and the stars of "Gone With The Wind" Clarke Gable (1901-1960) and Vivien Leigh (1913-1967). Actress and "The Love Goddess" Rita Hayworth (1918-1987) graces the cover.
