Original Concert Postcard: Creedence Clearwater Revival, Albert King, Black Pearl (September 19-21, 1968)

San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1968. First Edition, Second Printing. Single Sheet. This postcard (appx. 4 & 5/8" x 7”) designed by Rick Griffin promotes a concert series which took place during September 19th to the 21st, 1968 at the Fillmore West featuring Creedence Clearwater Revival, Albert King, and Black Pearl produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991). American psychedelic artist Rick Griffin (b. Richard Alden Griffin, 1944-1991) created the artwork & graphics reproduced here as well as many other poster designs of the era. Griffin is also one of the founding artists of Zap Comix and a key figure in the underground comix movement. Albert King (1923-1992) was a guitarist and singer who is often regarded as one of the greatest and most influential blues guitarists of all time. Creedence Clearwater Revival was a legendarily successful though short-lived band with brothers John (b. 1945) and Tom (1941-1990) Fogerty, Stu Cook (b. 1945), and Doug Clifford (b. 1945). The group appeared at Woodstock in 1969, and they produced five consecutive top-10 albums (of seven total) in just four short years. Several albums and songs of theirs are considered amongst the Greatest of All Time by Rolling Stone. Black Pearl was a San Francisco band active from 1967 to 1978 that released only two albums with their original line-up before dwindling to the power trio of Geoffrey Morris, Oak O’Connor, and Tom Mulcahy. This show would have taken place early on before their 1969 debut album. According to Eric King’s Collector’s Guide, “Many psychedelic posters have their origins in advertising images. This one is derived from a French cheese company known as ‘La Vache Qui Rit’ which is usually translated as ‘The Laughing Cow.’,” (pg. 478). The cow itself has pierced ears and a bleeding heart punctured by an arrow on its head, and its facial features appear very human. Verso features a calendar of other Bill Graham events from September 1968. Single sheet: first edition, second printing with all points in King's Collector's guide. (BG-137-OPC-B, pg. 478) In relatively very fine condition with only minuscule bumps to the fine edges; verso is clean, though mildly age-toned; otherwise, pristinely mint. Very Fine. [Item #8067]
