Detroit Artists' Workshop Program No. 12 (January 24, 1966)

Detroit, MI: Artists Workshop, 1965. First Printing. Folded Single Sheet. “Music today is by the Keith Vreeland Quartet, with Keith on piano, tenor saxophonist Larry Nozero, bassist Dick Whigington, & drummer Jim Nemeth. Keith’s group can be heard Thursday thru Saturday nights at ½ Pint’s, 692 Amsterdam between 2nd & 3rd, south of Grand Blvd. You hear the same music they play here, hip clubowner, no cover no minimum, drinks cheap. Help out the group, the club, & jazz in Detroit in general by supporting ½ Pint’s.” (Artists’ Workshop Program No. 12, interior) Offered today is another Detroit Artists’ Workshop rarity, Artists’ Workshop: Program #12: January 24, 1965. This broadside program outlines all those in attendance and the nature of their performance, as well as outlining future programs and events that the Workshop is holding. Listed to perform at this particular event are: the Keith Vreeland (1937-2018) Quartet (as quoted above); readings by John Sinclair (1941-2024), Robin Eichele (b. 1941) and George Tysh (b. 1942), of whom the program says the following, “John & George are in Wayne’s graduate school English department, & Robin is a senior in Monteith College. These are their fronts. You know what they really do.”; the Detroit Contemporary 5 “one of the finest jazz groups in the country. Organized and led by cornetist Charles Moore (1941-2014)…”; paintings by Howard Weingarden (1942-2011) were featured as well as assuredly many more impromptu performances by those in attendance. The program goes on to outline what the Artists’ Workshop Society is: “...is now a non-profit corporation, which means that people with money who have to pay income tax can donate funds to the Artists’ Workshop & deduct it from your taxes. Which is pretty hip. Dont [sic] give Sam that money, give it to us & see it go for love & not bombs & all that crap. We need it.” A radical program, with a radical message, Artists’ Workshop: Program #12: January 24, 1965 is a capsule of the experimental, revolutionary, and collaborative nature of the Detroit Artists’ Workshop and the incredible events they used to organize. From the collection of scholar, poet and our dear friend Robin Eichele (b. 1941), noted Mimeograph Revolutionary & co-founder (with the late, great John Sinclair [1941-2024]) of the Detroit Artists’ Workshop. Single folded sheet broadside. First & presumably only printing. In very fine condition with only minor wear to fine edges and slight discoloration due to age-toning. Very Fine. [Item #8075]
