Broadside, "The Drawings of Stephen Ligosky" with: Press Release (April 14- May 5, c.1965)

Detroit, MI: Detroit Artists' Workshop, c.1965. First Editions. Single Sheets. "The Artists' Workshop Society will open its new gallery April 14 with a show by Detroit artist Stephen Ligosky. The Workshop Gallery, like the other activities of the Society, will be a cooperative operated by artists of the workshop. Co-directors of the Gallery are Robin Eichele, George Tysh, and Martine Allgire. these directors will be coordinating the operations of the Gallery with an emphasis on new forms of expression and the work of young artists not yet established in commercial galleries." (first paragraph, press release) A letter-size (appx. 8 & 1/2" x 11") broadside on thick paper stock announcing the inaugural exhibit of the Detroit Artists' Workshop Gallery in Detroit featuring drawings by Stephen Ligosky during April 14- May 5, c.1965. With treated photographic image of Ligosky, who was among the co-founding members of the DAW along with the legendary John Sinclair (1941-2024), Robin Eichele (b. 1941), Martine Allgire (a/k/a Martina Algire) & George Tysh (b. 1942) in 1964. As quoted above, some of the foregoing are mentioned as directors of the Gallery in the undated, also letter-size press release for this exhibit, on thinner paper stock, included in this offer. The reference to "...a new magazine, WORK" (see our item No.s 6304, 6306) at the end of the press release leads us to surmise that both documents here date from 1965, as the first issues of WORK were published that year. From the collection of our good nearby friend & mentor Robin Eichele himself, the acclaimed American poet who (as noted above) co-founded the Detroit Artists' Workshop with Sinclair & Co. An outstandingly scarce DAW-related collectible bundle, in its singularly rarest contemporary form & with distinguished, most-relevant association & provenance. Broadside in relatively very fine condition with moderate-to-significant age-toning at printed recto & blank verso esp. at blank margins/edges; a touch of wear & some tiny bumps, creases at/from edges & corners. Press Release (again relatively) very fine with mild age-toning to printed recto & blank verso esp. at blank margins/edges; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners. Very Fine.
