Broadside: The Essence of Bukowski

Broadside: The Essence of Bukowski

San Francisco, CA: Sore Dove Press, 2005. Limited First Edition. Single Folded Sheet. Signed by Linda King. "The essence of Bukowski/ Still linger years after his death/ Because his hard-edged/ Writing is sanity/ In a troubled world soft/ With religious concepts/ With unreasonable war/ With power grabbing/ With corporate greed/ With fuzzy thinking/ With insane actions" (first lines) A broadside with the title poem by LInda King (b. 1940), an American sculptor, playwright, poet & editor who was the girlfriend of Charles Bukowski (1920-1994)- the cult favorite poet-denizen of the dive bar & the racetrack- during 1970-75. An eloquent & qualified attempt to indeed capture the "essence" of the acclaimed, mercurial & prolific Buk. Single sheet folded once horizontally, forming four pages including covers. With illustration at front cover reproduced in black-&-white by Doheyl Dahi (b. 1954), the noted artist & publisher who is the founder & editor of Sore Dove Press. Per colophon below ending of poem at back cover, this production is "Sore Dove Press Broadside Series Number Thirteen...Printed in an edition of 75 signed copies of which/ 65 were numbered and 10 were lettered/ with a color painting on the cover." This is copy No. 12/65 as hand-written in black ink below colophon, from the black-&-white portion of the edition. At front cover just below & slightly overlappiing with her printed name & just above illustration, King has hand-written her signature in bold black ink. An extremely scarce Buk-related collectible in its penultimately rarest form (so scarce as to have been missed by the exhaustive Debritto bibliography), for the determinedly completist collector. In relatively fine-to-very-fine condition with a touch of rubbing, occasional faint creasing to surfaces esp. covers; a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners; very small area of indeterminate spot-staining from right end of King's signature; very slight bleeding of signature onto verso/second page (with no effect on text). Fine-Very Fine. [Item #8100]
