(Debritto F18, p. 549) “Sometimes, those who know I was once a go- / go girl and knew Bukowski ask me if I met him / in a bar slinging his beer and no, I didn’t, but / it would’ve been interesting, and maybe / romantic to I‘ve met him as strangers across / a crowded barroom, he might’ve liked my / black-stockinged legs, maybe liked how I / was the only barmaid for miles who could / spell Nietzsche and I’m sure I would’ve / liked him, his beatnik hair and way with / words till he got drunk and stopped tipping / and smiling” (from “The Barmaid and the Barfly,” p. 13). A volume of poems by Joan Jobe Smith (b. 1940), a Paris, Texas born author & former go-go girl who knew and corresponded with the great American poet, Charles Bukowski (1920-1994), who was enormously complimentary in his estimation of Joan Jobe Smith and her work.
