Program: The WSU Artists' Society Presents a Concert of New Music (October 14, 1965)
Detroit, MI: WSU Artists' Society, 1965. First Edition, First Printing. Single Sheet. "It is our belief that jazz musical forms must be extended to meet an entirely new set of artistic, social, cultural, and economic circumstances....The artist presumes to judge life, to assess it for all men, to accept it, to reject it. Both as men and artists in a complex, oftentimes grievously unjust world we accept the challenge this society poses and project an answer through our music, one which sings a New America...." (jazz legend Archie Shepp; back page). Offered here is a Program (5.5" x 8.5” [folded]; 11" x 8.5" [unfolded]) announcing "New Music," a jazz-based concert at Wayne State University in October 1965, presented by the WSU Artists' Society, which had just been founded a year previously. The event, held on a Thursday night, was headlined by Charles Moore & the Detroit Contemporary 4, with an appearance by the Lyman Woodward/Charles Miles Duo, who were introduced by none other than the American poet, political activist, and founder of the WSU Artists' Society itself, John Sinclair (1941-2024). Sinclair and jazz trumpeteer Charles Moore (1951-2024) were two of the co-founders of the Detroit Artists Workshop, which evolved into Trans-Love Energies, an iconic commune/politcal organization in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area. Much of the music likely played at this event can be found online for added enjoyment, and is worth the trip down the proverbial rabbit hole. Please also see our extensive Sinclair offerings. From the collection of scholar, poet and our dear friend Robin Eichele (b. 1941), noted Mimeograph Revolutionary & a co-founder of the Detroit Artists' Workshop with the late, great John Sinclair and Charles Moore. Original Program by Detroit’s Artists’ Society: the First-&-only Printing of this delectably rare piece of WSU/Sinclair/jazz music ephemera, with most distinguished & relevant provenance. In relatively fine-to-very-fine condition with mild age-toning mostly to margins and fine edges and also along vertical fold/crease down middle of program; very minor chipping and bumping to corners and at fine edges; one 1/8" enclosed tear at bottom right corner of recto page; one 1/4" enclosed tear to same.
