Anonym Quarterly No. 4 (1969)
Buffalo, NY: Anonym Magazine, 1969. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. “What is around me is / this huge shape I can’t visualize / from here, sitting here quietly / nights go by the same way / noisy people outside on the block / so I can understand it better / Not all streets are like this one / bursting with so much energy / you can’t keep still / with cops watching over every second / nothing gets out of hand out there / but does deep inside you somewhere / down in your American soul / It’s hard to kill, harder still to love / where you come from when it hurts you / but you know you do, you do.”--Anne Waldman, “Mother Country,” pg. 54. Anonym Magazine was a quarterly, small-press, literary mag that was based in New York at the height of the New York School of Poetry and edited by Mark K. Robinson. Anonym 4 published in April of 1969, marked the first full year of the magazine's publication. This particular issue features the likes of: “Canto 120” by “The Fox,” a/k/a Ezra Pound (1885-1972) American literary icon (we grudgingly acknowledge) and early Modernist poet; “A Short Colorful Riot Poem for Lee Merrill,” and “A Structural Problem” by Paul Blackburn (1926-1971), the legendary Black Mountain poet; “belief poem,” “moon poem,” “for my young son,” “hubris,” and “invitation: a dream” by Robert Peters (1924-2014), the great poet, playwright, critic & educator who was originally a scholar of Victorian literature & became one of the foremost sui generis men of American letters; “Sarah Bernhardt,” “How to Cope With This?” and “Inoperable” by John Wieners (1934-2002) the ineffable Beat poet, and anti-war/gay rights activist; “Blake/Epistomology: Stance I” by Jack Clarke (1933-1992) noted poet, jazz musician and scholar of William Blake and Charles Olson; and “Mother Country” (quoted above) by Anne Waldman (b. 1945) the great American experimental poet, among many other great contributions! From the collection of Albert Glover (b. 1942), the great American scholar, bibliographer, author & publisher who is the foremost living authority on literary (and literal) giant Charles Olson (our favorite Maximus Obscurantist), with whom we’re honored to be acquainted. Stapled wrappers. First & presumably only printing. In relatively fine condition with minor wear to fine edges; moderate smudging/staining to front and back covers; small area of peeling/loss of surface paper to back cover (see photos); moderate rusting at staples; and slight age-toning to pages.
