American Poet: The Journal of the Academy of American Poets (Summer 1997)
New York, NY, USA: Academy of American Poets, 1997. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. This number of the official journal of the prestigious Academy of American Poets is especially notable for its memorial-acknowledgement on the death of Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997), a Founding Father of the Beat Generation & among the most illustrious members of the Academy, only a few months earlier. The six-page section (pgs. 10-15) includes articles & commentary by Philip levine, Thom Gunn & others; as well as transcripts of several classic Ginsberg poems including "America" (1956). Gunn writes, in part: "Not only a master in the art of poetry, Ginsberg was a poet who took the art seriously, following far other models than most of his contemporaries. He was an artist in the sense of craftsman, as can be seen in the deliberated architecture of "Howl"; he wrote expansively..." (pg. 11). With several contemporary photographs of the later Ginsberg. Also in this issue: Transcript of a Keynote Address by Cynthia Ozick (b. 1928), the award-winning American author, delivered at the Academy's 1996 Awards Ceremony; articles on various other awards & prizes; calendar of readings; books noted; publishers' advertisements etc. large-format journal in stapled wrappers, presumed first-&-only printing. From the collection of Albert Glover (b. 1942), the acclaimed American poet, editor, publisher & scholar who is the foremost living authority on Charles Olson (1910-1970), the Great (literally & literarily) Black Mountain-&-Beyond Poet's Poet- our favorite Maximus Obscurantist. A remarkably scarce number of the venerable poetry journal, in its singularly rarest form & with distinguished, relevant provenance- of essential interest especially to the Ginsberg collector-completist. In relatively very fine condition with very slight rubbing, faint scratching to front, back covers & stapled spine; a touch of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at/from edges & corners of same; staples in process of rusting with minimal interior & exterior bleeding. Interior very fine with only miniscule rusting at middle noted above; tiny bumps, faint creases at esp. lower corners of a few page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #8154]
